client: andrew denton

the son of an author, Andrew studied media communications and began his career writing for radio.
he then wrote and hosted comedic television programs and went on to writing, hosting and producing television programs..and hosting radio. currently seen on Enough Rope.
Andrew refers to himself as being fierce and shy (and knowing how not to be). he has been referred to as a hardworking perfectionist but also compassionate.
what i find interesting about andrew is, he is in the business of revealing via witty, clever, humourous interviewing whilst being this shy and "uncomfortable as being a public person". he is in the business of editing;
(edit v. prepare for publication or broadcast. 2 cut and collate to form unified sequence. 3 reword modify. source: oxford australian dictionary, 2007).
we could say that what we are provided by those who edit is not the whole story; there is that which we are told and that which is not... what we see is not the whole story.

client: jennifer byrne

began her media career as a cadet journalist in australia and then in the US and Britain, returning to become a founding reporter for television program 'Sunday'. Continued onto '60 Minutes' and ABC radio. also involved in publishing...and this where Jennifers passion resides; in books. Claims to now have her 'dream job' as the host of 'First Tuesday Book Club', where not only is the printed word is dissected and assessed, but also the authors... just as Andrew enjoys getting to the heart of people, Jennifer revels in getting to the heart of a book and its author. again, editing through writing, reporting and hosting is a common element in Jennifers career.

according to andrew, jennifer is responsible for the development of his optimism. together they have one child, a son named connor.
and in the beginning, there were potentials, and from this a 'weaving' variation was borne....

the connection i have made between andrew denton and jennifer byrne to this weaving potentials is that which relates to the editing element in the nature of their work...

i have applied the the concept of weaving in relation to the placement of spaces of the home on the site; weaving the spaces in regard to what exists on the site.

weaving also provides the revealing and concealing elements to the home, as it weaves it is not revealed in a single view potentially extending privacy.

i have employed several of the archtectonic results from this weaving variation as the spaces for the home for andrew, jennifer and connor, and although they may seem somewhat quirky, i believe both andrew and jennifer would have a sense of humour to embrace this digital concept. (funnily, it almost looks Logie-like in plan, something andrew has been nominated for!) i chose the shapes from the weaving variation that mimicked the smooth undulations of the land, the swirling westerly winds of the location and the peaks of the ocean.

my intention is provide this family with a home that supports their potential need for time out of the limelight, during the period where there television recording commitments cease - the summer months of the year. a home which responds to the individual, the family as a whole, and to the possibility of extended family or guests during the festive period through provisions of combined spaces and private spaces where connection with the site, its surrounds and elements of sun, sky, vegetation and sea are incorporated.

weaving:
what you can see, do not negate that which you can not as this completes the story.

editing:

what you are told, do not negate that which you are not as this completes the story.

weaving and editing; revealing and concealing.

i have chosen the location of this home with several thoughts in mind:

even though the bruny island can provide those in the limelight/ celebrity with much privacy due to its non mainland location, i have considered further visual access privacy from the access road. rather than having the home being viewed down upon, i have chosen to locate the home where it holds heirarchy over the view onto the access road. also, this position, rather than closer to the water edge also provides the home with a longer and slightly higher view across the bay.

as the beach is not of a soft sandy nature but a rocky one and the vegetation of the surrouding areas provide temptation for exploration and discovery, water activities such as kayaking, sailing (?) etc. may be an option, and for that i have chosen keep a relatively close distance to the beach to keep arduous movement of required equipment to a minimum.

i have chosen to orientate the building to gain maximum access to views across the bay from the main home space. this has been achieved by providing major glazing to east and west in this space. i have considered the mild climate of bruny island and the occupation period and believe that this should not be to the detriment of occupant comfort.

vehicular entry to the home is from the south and under the canopy, which leads to the entry to the main space of the home. the canopy also provides shelter to connors bedroom pod (south/west) and guest bedroom pod (south/ east) and the night fire grotto which is between the main home space and the bedroom pods.

connor, 15, has been provided with a bedroom pod which is separate from the main home space to reflect his transition from child to young adult and beyond. here, he has lounge/'chill' space with access to exterior deck to the west and ensuite provisions.

the guest bedroom pod offers sleeping space and ensuite provisions on this level. similarly, separate from the main home space...as we can appreciate, staying with friends or relatives is fun but a little extra private space can make the stay more enjoyable!

main entry gives direct acces to the library/lounge/ family area. glazing to east and west and exterior decking to west. stair access to dining/kitchen space is located in this space.

to the north/east is the bedroom pod for andrew and jennifer. the pod has a slight rotation west from the lounge/library/family space so as to deny direct visual access from this area into the bedroom. sleeping and ensuite provisions on this level with major visual access to east.

to the north/west is andrews den where andrew can have moments of recluse to work on any concepts for the following year. major visual access to west and supplementary access to north.

to the north/east is the bedroom suite for andrew and jennifer. this upper floor provides private area for repose as a couple and overlooks andrews den to the west.

centrally located is the dining kitchen space with stair access to ground floor at north.

connors sleeping space is south/west, while guests, south/east, have a micro kitchen/suite and balcony space to enjoy refreshments on this level.

vehiclular entry/ canopy to entry & over night fire grotto: location south of lounge/library/family area.

welcoming the family to the home is the long scooped plane canopy from potentials which also provides shelter to bedroom pods, also potentials, from the main home and, over the night fire grotto where once the sunset displays from the west deck are over, the family can move to a summer evening around a fire to discuss the adventures of the day; whether they be of jennifers latest new novel or of andrew and connors kayaking from the rocky beach just across the roadway.

lounge/library/family 'chill' area: location is the centre of the home. the family access this via the entry located at the south.

the intention of this area is to provide the family with space to be together, with jennifers ever increasing library of books which she can dive into during her break period. glazing to east and west provide sunrise and sunset panoramas capturing the surrounding bushland and sparkling sea with emotive language. this can be further enjoyed with an exterior deck extending from the west glazed face. stairs lead to the dining kitchen area which also hold views across the bay. glazing to the north capture the movement of activity on the stair but also provide snapshot outwards across the north face of the site. similarly, glazing to the south of the dining area capture a view across the smooth scooped roof plane of the lounge/library/family area and further along the canopy which connects the entry to vehiclular access which is flanked by bedroom pods to the south of the home.

andrews den: location is to the north of the home with potential views west across the bay and light access from glazing on north.

although this home is intended for use by the family in the period when both andrew and jennifer have completed their television commitments, i have provided 'workaholic' andrew with a place for following seasons work to unfold and evolve with access to peaceful sky and sea as patient accompaniments. this perspective view shows the the ' walk' that links the den from the lounge/library/family space. this space sits carved into the site as there is a rise in level in this area.
